Memo: Back To Office Policy Effective Immediately

The email subject line we pray never to see.

But as always, I’m going to keep it real with you guys. Changes are happening.

There’s a lot of noise that the future of remote work is looking…iffy.

But the idea that remote work is “dead” is silly and a huge overstatement. Though, it is evolving.

This isn’t just my vibe check on the health of remote work, the data has my back here.

You could say it’s declining from its pandemic high obviously, but it’s not dying—15% of new jobs in the US are still fully remote (up from 10% in Q1 2023, and 23% are hybrid (up from 15% in Q1 2023).

Meanwhile, fully in-office postings dropped from 83% to 61%. The nomad lifestyle might need tweaking— fewer "laptop on a beach" pics—but the stats show flexibility’s here to stay.

The trend of hybrid work on the rise could be a bit of an obstacle as this usually requires 1-2 days in-office per week. This makes traveling abroad very unrealistic.

The real secret to being fully-remote: be really f*cking good at what you do

The biggest debate with remote work is that the employees aren’t working and lack productivity. This isn’t far-fetched. Being inactive on Slack for hours, having your camera off on morning video calls, and being slow to complete your tasks. It’s not only hurting your performance, but remote jobs as a whole.

So here is my advice to you. Be really good at what you do. So good that your remote status is never ever questioned or debated because you get shit done.

Will your manager care if you want to work remotely from Japan for a month? Probably not, because you’re reliable no matter where you are. But, the other employee that disappears for hours at a time during the day may not get the same treatment.

Frosted Tips of the Week:

  • Plan Your Entire DN Setup in Minutes: I just stumbled upon a FREE tool that’s honestly a game-changer: wherenomadsgo.com. Pick your destination, then book your stay, gym, and coworking space—all in one place. No more 10+ tabs open just to plan a trip! This isn’t sponsored, I just think it’s genius. It’s a brand-new tool, and the founder is open to feedback—drop your thoughts here.

  • Bali Debates Bhutan Style Tax: Bali introduces a new tourism tax as of Feb 14th, 2025, of 150k IDR (~$10) which is extra on top of the 500k IDR visa on arrival. But there is chatter that they want to adopt a Bhutan style tax where they would charge tourists $100/day to be on the island. Personally, I think this would crush local businesses almost instantly. Let’s see.

A quick glance of what your setup could look like in Bangkok.

Nomad Diaries: Nicole

Digital Nomad Profile: Nicole
home city/country: New Brunswick, Canada 🇨🇦
current base: Big White, BC, Canada 🇨🇦
role/profession: Copywriter
# of years as a digital nomad: 2

Compared to some of the diaries I read on here, my setup may sound a bit lame but hey, I’m doing what I love. Even though I’m technically still in my home country, I’m 5000kms away from my hometown, so yes I am a digital nomad by definition!

How do you manage being a DN on a ski resort? It’s actually super manageable believe it or not. I’m a copywriter, so I do all my writing in the evenings, and a few stand up calls during my early morning. By 11am, my calls are done for the day and I’m on the chairlift. I don’t recommend this life to people who have strict core hours of 9-5.

what’s your biggest digital nomad hack? Having a side hustle funds all my dumb expenses like eating out way too often.

biggest digital nomad f*ck up? Telling people I work remotely and everyone automatically assumes I can get them a job at my company. I don’t blame them.

what’s your non-negotiable item when travelling? My snowboard or surfboard depending where I am

Favourite & least favourite destination?

fav: Right here on the mountain. Half the price of Whistler and wayyyy better conditions and powder.

least fav: Cancun did not work for me the slightest. It also destroyed my credit card.

okay last one, one piece of advice for a new nomad? There are no set rules. If you want to DN in your home country, why not.

📍Pin It: Kotor, Montenegro 🇲🇪

It won’t be long until this place is as touristy and busy as Dubrovnik or Lisbon, so hurry there!

Let’s run it down:

  • 📍 Pin It: Kotor, Montenegro 🇲🇪

💰 Cost of Living: Cost of Living: ~$1,000-$1,600 per month for a solo nomad—cheap for Europe, especially with that coastal glow
🛂 Visa Info: Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free. For longer, Montenegro’s Digital Nomad Visa is in the works (launched 2022)—$2,000 monthly income proof, stay up to a year
🏄 Perfect for Scenic Vibes: Get the view of the bay, the mountains, and the old town all in one place
🍽 Food & Culture: Savor seafood risotto at Konoba Catovica Mlini, sip rakija at cozy bars like The Njegosh, or grab cheap eats (ćevapi for $5) at local joints
🌎 Digital Nomad Community: Small but growing—check Kotor Coworking or pop into cafes like Omnia for nomad meetups. Expats spill tips on the Kotor Expats FB group
🏠 Housing Tips: Airbnbs are heating up in prices (as always) so the best bet here without breaking the bank is snagging a hostel and going to a cowork during the day!

It wouldn’t be a weekly newsletter without the jam of the week. Life Happens.
